this video will show you how to replace a greencorner rib and canopy, which we'll desmonstrate on the refurbishment of this nine year old umbrella. most of the tools you'll need are included with your replacement rib, and some are available separately at most hardware stores, and through greencorner. the first step is to remove the canopy. while the swap can be made without
completely removing it, it will be significantly easier to make the replacement on a bare frame. this is done by removing each l-bracket, with the umbrella closed and still in its base. a power drill can be used instead of a hand-powered phillips-head screwdriver. just be careful not to strip the screws. you'll need a power drill to install a new rib, as you'll be inserting the screws directly into the wood.
you'll then remove the finial and the canopy. to remove the bolts holding the broken rib, use the hex keys provided. we're starting with the bolt on the bottom hub. you'll then repeat the process at the other end. to install the new rib, begin by ensuring the rib is oriented correctly, with the short portion pointing to the sliding lower hub, and the long portion at the top hub.
it's also important to ensure the flat side of the rib is facing outward. double check by comparing it against the existing ribs. open the loctite included with your rib and apply just a drop to the threads of the male side of one of the bolts. insert the plastic washers, and position the rib in the u-bracket such that all the holes line up on both sides.
you may need to flex other ribs to achieve this. insert the sleeve side of the mated bolt through the holes to hold the rib in place, then secure it with the portion of the bolt covered with loctite. repeat the same procedure at the other end. again, you may need to open the frame slightly to get all the holes to align. this is normal.
replace the canopy the same way it was removed. the flat, protective ring of fabric will be facing down towards the hub. screw the finial in slightly to hold the canopy in place. don't completely tighten it just yet. you'll want your frame to be open to the lowest setting to ensure a tight fit. use a hand clamp to hold the l-brackets in place as you secure each end of the canopy
to the rib. the screws should be installed as straight and centered as possible, so as to avoid splitting the wood, and the canopy stretched hand-tight towards the tips of the ribs. once all l-brackets are installed, screw the finial in hand-tight. if you have any questions about this process, you can also contact greencorner on our website,
